This gene encodes a member of the nuclear distribution E (NudE) family of proteins. Mutations in this gene cause lissencephaly 4, a disorder characterized by lissencephaly, severe brain atrophy, microcephaly, and severe cognitive disability. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
