Background: | FURALTADONE is the generic name given to a nitrofuran chemically described as 5-morpholinol-methyl-3-(5-nitrofurfurylideneamino) -2-oxazolidone.1 As has been observed for various other nitrofurans, furaltadone is inhibitory and bactericidal in vitro for staphylococci. In contrast to nitrofurantoin, which also inhibits staphylococci in vitro,2 furaltadone is not rapidly excreted in the urine, at least not in an active form. It was hoped, therefore, that inhibitory concentrations could be produced in the plasma and that it would serve as effective treatment for serious systemic staphylococcal infections. |
