Methyltransferase-like protein 11A (METTL11A) is a member of the methyltransferase superfamily and METTL11 family. Methyltransferase is a transferase enzyme that moves a methyl group from one molecule to another. Methylation frequently affects nucleic acids or amino acids in protein molecules. The methyltransferase enzyme uses S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) as the methyl donor and a reactive methyl group bound to sulfur. In most cases, methylation of DNA is used to silence and regulate genes without changing the DNA sequence. Cytosine residues are methylated in this case. DNA methylation may be necessary for normal growth from embryonic stages in mammals. Methylation can protect DNA from enzymatic cleavage; owing to the fact that restriction enzymes are unable to bind and recognize altered sequences. This is especially beneficial in bacterial restriction modification systems that employ restriction enzymes to cut foreign DNA while maintaining their own DNA protected by methylation. The formation of proteins requires the methylation of amino acids, which generates a wider range of possible amino acids and so a greater potential for function. The methylation reaction takes place on nitrogen atoms in the protein's N terminus or side chain position and is generally irreversible. Human METTL11A Recombinant Protein is a highly pure recombinant protein developed by Assay Genie for use in a range of applications.
