IL21 belongs to the IL-15/IL-21 family. It is a cytokine with immunoregulatory activity. Cytokines are proteinaceous signaling compounds that are major mediators of the immune response. They regulate a variety of cellular activities, including cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival/apoptosis, as well as several pathological processes including viral infections and autoimmune diseases. Cytokines are produced by a variety of cells in the innate (monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells) and adaptive (T- and B-cells) immune systems in response to a variety of stimuli. However, IL-21 is expressed in activated CD4+ T-cells but not in CD8+ T-cells, B-cells, or monocytes. IL-21 may help promote the switch between innate and adaptive immunity. IL-21 has been used to treat asthmatic reactions. It has been demonstrated to reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines and IgE levels in a mouse model of rhinitis (nasal passage inflammation). Human Interleukin-21/IL-21 Recombinant Protein is a highly pure recombinant protein developed by Assay Genie for use in a range of applications.
