The cytokines of the IL-6/GCSF/MGF family are glycoproteins with four conserved cysteine residues arranged in two disulfide bonds and approximately 170 to 180 amino acids in length. Their structure is very similar to other interleukins, and they have a compact, globular fold that is stabilized by the two disulfide bonds. The structure contains a 4 alpha-helix bundle with a left-handed twist and helices that are anti-parallel, with 2 overhand bonds, which fall into a 2-stranded anti-parallel beta-sheet. The fourth alpha helix is crucial to the molecule's biological function. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a proinflammatory and immunoregulatory cytokine produced by various cells. In vitro, interleukin-6 has been found to slow the growth of early-stage melanoma cells and stimulate their growth in advanced-stage melanoma cells. Human IL-6/Interleukin-6 Recombinant Protein is a highly pure recombinant protein developed by Assay Genie for use in a range of applications.
