Hyaluronan has been shown to help with cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation. Hyaluronidase-1, also known as HYAL1, is the major hyaluronidase in plasma and is active at an acidic pH. Mucopolysaccharidosis type IX, also known as hyaluronidase deficiency, is associated with a mutation in this gene. The gene is located in a tumour-suppressive area of chromosome 3p21.3. Natowicz Syndrome and Mucopolysaccharidosis, Type Ix are diseases linked to HYAL1. Chondroitin sulfate/dermatan sulphate metabolism and glycosaminoglycan metabolism are two related pathways of HYAL1/Hyaluronidase-1.
