Fibroblast growth factors (FGF) are a group of heparin-binding proteins produced by cells that promote cell proliferation and specialization in a variety of tissues. It has been shown that FGFs have a wide range of biological roles in both vivo and in vitro, including mitosis; cellular migration; differentiation; angiogenesis; and wound healing. Human embryonic stem cell (hESC) cultures in cell culture media require FGF basic (also known as bFGF) to remain undifferentiated and pluripotent. The thermostable FGF basic was created for improved maintenance in culture medium; its biological function has not been altered. For keeping cells in an undifferentiated state, FGF basic is a necessary component of stem cell culture media. Because FGF basic is sensitive to media changes, frequent replacements are necessary. The thermostable FGF basic is a two-day media change option that does not require any media changes during the weekend. In biochemistry activities, the thermostable FGF basic was more stable than FGF basic; and it maintained cell growth, pluripotency, and differentiation potential with a two-day feeding regimen. Human FGF-2/FGF basic/FGFb Recombinant Protein is a highly pure recombinant protein developed by Assay Genie for use in a range of applications.
