Beta defensin 4A (DRFB4) is a membrane-active cationic peptide that functions in inflammation and innate immune responses. There are at least 30 and beta-defensins, which differ from ?-defensins by their three intermolecular disulfide linkages. The proteins of the defensin family are highly similar. DEFPB4 has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and may play a crucial role in innate epithelial protection. They're highly activated in the skin and tonsils, although they are also expressed to a lesser extent in the trachea, uterus, kidney, thymus, adenoid, pharynx, and tongue. The salivary gland, bone marrow, colon, stomach, polyp and larynx all have low levels of beta-defensin 4A expression. DRFB4 has no expression in the small intestine.
