The enzyme Z-farnesyl diphosphate synthase (FDPS), a member of the transferase family, is an enzyme that transfers aryl or alkyl groups other than methyls. Isoprenoid biosynthesis is dependent on the Z-farnesyl diphosphate synthase (FDPS) which catalyzes the conversion of farnesyl diphosphate to other molecules involved in various classes of primary metabolites. FDPS catalyzes the production of geranyl pyrophosphate and farnesyl pyrophosphate from isopentenyl pyrophosphate and dimethylallyl pyrophosphate. The final product, farsenyl pyrophosphate, is a key precursor in cholesterol and sterol synthesis; a substrate for farnesylation and geranylgeranylation; and an activator or ligand for certain hormone receptors and growth receptors. Drugs that inhibit this enzyme prevent the post-translational modifications of small GTPases and have been used to treat diseases related to bone resorption. Interferon-induced RSAD2 inhibits the functions of FDPS. This inactivation may result of disruption of lipid rafts at the plasma membrane; and thus have an antiviral effect since many enveloped viruses need lipid rafts to bud efficiently out of the cell.
