The 14-3-3 protein theta/YWHAQ product is a member of the 14-3-3 protein family, which binds to phosphoserine-containing proteins and acts as a signal transducer. 14-3-3 proteins are, in fact, components of the highly conserved protein family that can be found in both plants and animals. The orthologs from mice and rats are 99 percent identical. In persons with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, 14-3-3 protein theta/YWHAQ is overexpressed. It has a polymorphic 6bp tandem repeat sequence in its 5' UTR. YWHAQ is linked to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles.
