This gene encodes a transmembrane proteolipid protein that is the predominant component of myelin. Mutations in this gene cause Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease and spastic paraplegia type 2. Alternatively splicing results in multiple transcript variants, including the DM20 splice variant.
