Background: | CD73 (ecto-5'-nucleotidase) is a 70 kDa glycoprotein anchored to the extracellular leaflet of the plasma membrane by GPI. This ecto-enzyme catalyzes dephosphorylation of AMP to adenosine. CD73 is expressed in various types of cells, such as epithelial, muscle, and endothelial cells, neutrophils, lymphocytesand fibroblasts. Inflammatory mediators support CD73 expression and its enzymatic activity, leading to the release of adenosine, which modulates inflammation through adenosine receptors. CD73 is expressed in a variety of lymphomas and leukemias, including ALL and CLL, whereas immunodeficient patients usually express low levels of this protein. |
UniProt Protein Function: | NT5E: Hydrolyzes extracellular nucleotides into membrane permeable nucleosides. Homodimer; disulfide-linked. Belongs to the 5'-nucleotidase family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing. |

NCBI Summary: | The protein encoded by this gene is a plasma membrane protein that catalyzes the conversion of extracellular nucleotides to membrane-permeable nucleosides. The encoded protein is used as a determinant of lymphocyte differentiation. Defects in this gene can lead to the calcification of joints and arteries. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.[provided by RefSeq, Mar 2011] |
